Comments:These are apples and oranges. High school teams don't see the competition level like AAU tournaments (the big ones), not even at regionals or state. AAu doesn't have the same high school discipline and structure (AAU practices once or twice a week versus 5 to 6 practices a week on a high school team). High Schools will have 3 to 4 solid players playing AAU, but that will be two seniors and two juniors. An AAu team will have 7 solid players in each grade, so that would be 14 between juniors and seniors. There is no comparison between the two because they are so different. But when it comes to coaching, many high school coaches, especially in other states, coach AAU, so how someone can say coaching is better or worse is beyond me. Many high school must have teachers as coaches. Many AAU coaches have played and coached at a higher level but are not teachers. Coaching is similar, players in AAU are better by far.

Comments:Yes, the Ohio Warriors are a real team (based in Columbus) and should be competitive. Four of the best players from the 2009 Lima 5th grade team are on this team (2 are from Columbus so it made sense). They will have some size and athletic ability and should compete well. If you are in the Lima area, we will still have a solid team and have tryouts on Dec. 12th. If you are in Columbus, you should look up the Warriors and try out for the team.

Comments:In actuality many high level AAU coaches have access to many college coaches. Some college coaches even "recommend" play styles. I have heard more stressed from the NBA down for AAU coaches to stress fundamentals. The perception may be that high level aau teams just run together and play but these coaches are teaching kids or they wouldn't succeed. High school coaches play against lesser talent which make HS teams less effective by aau standards. Most HS players have no more than two great players. Great AAU teams can be 7 deep. Coaching still matters, experience still matters but recruiting budgets limit recruiting, many HS throughout ohio or as a scout attend king james tourney.

Yes the College Coaches like AAu because their is more oppurtunity to see a kid and the it is going on in the off season. High School coaches have to worry about grades and must actually take the kidsd he has and develop. Anybody can coach AAU all you need is players. High School Ball and AAU ball help each other in AAU they see the Athletic Part in High school they oserve them playing under structure.

Comments:Tom, Some might and some play better for their respected AAU coaches than their schools. Some kids have been with their AAU coach for 5-6 years and feel very confident with them. Some would wamt their AAU coach to coach their High School team and most would do a better job. A high level AAU coach has coached agaist better competion from the National level. He or she also coaches 75 to 100 games a year. 3x that of a High school coach. Throw in 2 practices a week, thats alot of ballin. High school has become 2nd fiddle to AAU as far as recruiting. College coaches keep in touch with their AAU coaches more than High school. This is why alot of Colleges are hiring ex AAU personal for thier recruiting.

Take your kids to nationals and expose your kids to more basketball, from what I see these kids and some coaches need it. Yes, money will help but player still has to perform. Its easy to be big fish in little pond, step the stage up, step the competition up, and you'll see what I see. Average ball players being compared with cream of the crop is no comparison. Tyler is not my child nor do I coach him but he has my respect for what he has done over time. Earn your stripes!!! You are to arrogant to understand this concept!!!

The previous post is obviously a parent or something because he was offended at the remark with the Ulis kid being used as an example. They said he was a good player, what else do you want them to say? It's the parents that come on here and start the " Who's the best in whatever class" ?? You parents want your child to live the dream that you couldn't have! About being nationally ranked as a young player--well, we all know that it's whatever parent can afford to take thier child to the exposure camps. If people can do it, then that's all good. Thier are also single parents who act likt they don't have any money so thier AAU coach will pay for everything. Coaches seem to be in it just for the WINS and not for the right reasons anymore!

Announce his awards its one thing to say "Congrads Blake for receiving an invitation to Adidas Phenoms" that I understand. You are selling the kid. that's the turn off. Second plenty other kids get recognition without being members of columbus teams. I have seen Gigax everywhere from All Ohio events, IPS events, to the Open run. He is solid he is proving that with his play---not his coach coming on the sight and saying he's good. At the end of the day no one will respect your opinion because your just selling your kids. Do not down grade Tyler and make your player better in the same sntence.

Comments:The Columbus teams always get the most respect and exposure on this site! They even postes that thier 14u group won state last year and the Lakers crushed them for the title! So, why do they post it on this site? It's thier exposure! Misleading???? The bottom limne is that thier is alot of talent in Ohio and not just in Columbus! The previous post bashes Blake and praises Tyler Ulis. Must be a Columbus parent or coach (i'm assuming). Tyler is a good player but give respect to others who deverve it too!!!!!!! If you have ever taken your child to the Buckeye Prep, you will see that most of the time, the Columbus kids are always on hte same team. This is why alot of the Cincinnati kids won't attend this showcase. The coaches that coach in it always pick someone they know to be in the all-star games.

Comments:Regarding if the talent pool at the camp was the greatest or not, having the ablitiy to compete against guys that you don't normally see is always a GREAT thing. It gets you ready for up and coming tournaments. It also allows you to see what other kids are doing/not doing which in turn if your a good student of the game, will allow you to edit some of the things that you as a player or coach may/may not be doing. Every tournament isn't always going to be full of future Lebrons and Kobe's. Props to all those that attended that are trying to take their game to the next level.

Ulis dominated, X dominated, Oakley dominated, Patterson balled games 2 & 3. 6'6 big is unskilled and just big. Gigax was solid but had problems with bigs. Simpson was was very solid. Cincy did well!
Comments:Exactly, to the last post. I was at the Open Run and it was ok but could have been better. I did notice some stand outs from Cincy. The three 8th graders from Cincy really did well, Adam Gigax, he has really stepped up his game since AAU season, and he maybe be the best Shooting Guard/Forward I have seen in a while, Blake Simpson probally the strongest forward player with skill out there, Antonio Woods really showed me a different side of his game. His last game was great, he scored at will, knocking down three after three, mid range game and drive, played tight "D" and he ran the show, I actually spoke with the Coach and he said they call him "Money" and I know why! The Big kid who plays for the King James team has a chance to be special he is about 6"6 long blocks shots, rebounds, needs to work on his post moves and strength, Tyler Ulis from OBC was there but he seemed to be not interested or under the weather, but of course he did run his team and had some strong assists and There w

Comments:There are different reasons for different families in that decision. Some families do it so that the child can improve in school, some people do it for maturity, and some do it for the development of the childs body. The point of the matter is this, if the family feels as if it is great for thier child then it is what it is. Once the child is past middle school years add up they dont subtract. If the child is not ready past thier senior year, the college or university will send them to prep any way so that is like being held back just at a later stage in thier life. There is nothing wrong with getting prepared for life, school, sports or the work force. People come on here and act like there is no upside to it, but there is if everything is in place for that child to succeed!

Comments:You all are trippin over non-sense. Holding a kid back is the PARENT and CHILD's decision. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Whern you go to out of town AAU tournaments and see the best players out there, it is 99% of the time grade exceptions. Now, the AAU needs to do something about the grade excetion thing b/c it is getting out of hand. When you take a 3rd grade boy for example playing a kid that has been held beac, the 1 yr gap is a BIG difference. Now, when you get in high school, everyone is competing against 3 or 4 age groups and teams. All they need to do is have a league for grade exceptions and a league for ligit age players. It doesn't matter to me anymore b/c my son has graduated but I have seen how EVIL coaches can be with playing time and favortism. It's all about winning for most coaches and the development of players is going down hill fast. That's why so many players from other countries are being recruited here in the US and getting drafted to the NBA. Parent

I read in an earlier post he attended Walnut Hills and grades were not his issue, so Mom is on her game in that asspect, it is only a year not a life time. He just needed to mature from what I gather, because I read he just turned 14. I also read he was not getting playing time and I know the Lakers personally, I know he was'nt being trained. So why is it such a BIG Deal? When you had him you didnt use him. Who cares who he plays for if he is being taking care of and loved by his family, if he is looking at playing basketball he will need to be on his "A" game and clearly Mom and WHO EVER else thinks this will benefit him in the long Hual! Someone is upset (LAKERS)and is taking out thier displeasure on the message board, MAYBE YOU SHOULD have been held back! I dont know the Woods Family but if it works move forward and never look back, People will talk reguardless, Im sure you are Aware of this.

Comments:Woods is a descent player but he was playing behind some very good guards in Jordan, Watkins, Lowry and Wedlock. Those kids earned there playing time and you are putting them down by saying Woods should have played over them. This is my opinion from being at most of the practices. Personal relationships should not get in the way of the entire team. I can see trouble coming for TPB because of this.

Can someone tell me when a kid turns 13 on January 1st and then you have a kid that won't turn 13 until April 1st (for those of you who don't know that's only a three month difference not a 3 year difference - please understand)why is it that we act as if that three month gap is the reason why onekid is better than the other and that it's unfair....for those of you who always scream they have grade exemptions. That's strictly an aau bs thing. So what someone is 3 months older, get a grip and stop crying foul. Three months or approximately is not that big a gap. Your son is just not capable of playing against him/her yet that's your excuse.

Comments:This is to Confused and to Problem????Let me straighten a few things out. I'm not Ms. Woods nor am I Coach Green but I love how grown people get on this message board talking about "KIDS" and don't know nothing about what their talking about. All of these "haters" making speculations about Antonio Woods and why his mother held him back. First of all, if she hasn't told you from her own mouth then you really don't know. Education is important to her but you wouldn't know that based on your ignorant comments. By the way, Antonio did sit on the bench with the Lakers but it wasn't because of his lack of talent. Antonio can play with the best of them and the only thing Coach Green is guilty of is helping develop that talent. Ms. Woods stays at the gym (Sports Plus, Landmark, McGee's). If there's anything that you haters and speculators want to know, just ask her. Quote for the day...."God loves you, do something to make him proud" By the way, he just recently turned 14.

Comments:Why are some of you on here BASHING the Woods kid and his mother? Look at how many grade exceptions there are in each grade! So, what do you say to those kids and parents? The Lakers had 3 grade exceptions on thier 8th grade team this past year. So, therefore , do you think they could cut it in there TRUE grade? Almost all of your top players in each age group are all GRADE EXCEPTIONS and I wish the rosters for each tournament would post who they are so everyone would know and there would be no---he must be older stuff!!! Grade exceptions should have to play in thier real grade until at least high school, then it won't matter! ALOT of parents are holding thier kids back for some reason----thier reason and decision! Good luck to you A Woods. You are a really good player who i feel didn't get a chance to prove it this past year! Too many kids sitting on that bench on the Lakers that could and should have played alot more than they did. They would start on most other teams!

I understand why he left the Lakers, because he wasn't gonna be a star for their 14U team and that team doesn't need to use a grade exception on a 3rd guard. That being said we are coming for the 14U Lakers this year. SO BE PREPARED !!!

I guess you can sum it up as he could not cut it with his own peer he grow with playing sports. So (MS Woods) is saying basketball is more important to her then education. This is a very very bad message to send kids in the world today. What happen to if can't cut it, you work harder to better. So, what will happen in the real world? You going to hold him back again. He is a great student but he wanted to do this for his development, (Great job Ms.Woods) it seems to me people jump to conclusions, but I know several people who have stayed back. I think this was a great move for Antonio because he sat on the Lakers bench, but he was not in thier rotation. Great job HILL! Comments:Jr All-American Camp Open Runs are the newest addition to our brand. Open Runs will be held in designated cities across the US during 2009-2010 school year! Players who attend an Open Run can still earn an invitation to the National camp, if they are selected as one of the Top performers. Open Runs however are different from regional camps. There are no "stations" that feature skill development and drills. Only games. 5-on-5. They are open to anyone in 5th through 9th grade. Also, unlike most of our regional camps Open Runs are just one day. They are held 8:00am - 3:00pm on a Saturday or Sunday. Locations or sites are in the city, closer in, unlike some regional camps which can be further out in suburbs and thus difficult or inconvenient for many to get to. Similar to regional camps, scouts will attend the Open Runs. They will cover them and may do a ranking following the event that could appear on scouting service website, the Jr All-American Camp site and/or other popular Internet ba

Comments:Way to start that up Coach Cook... 3 positive things... 1. Live your life like someone else's depends on it because it does, 2. Help your kids struggle so they know what it feels like, then help them through the struggles so they know how to overcome and that they can overcome (go buy that R-Swift cd called "Anthem" so you can hear an overcomer, and 3. Get to know and live out all 3 forms of love with the people in your life (Storag - family relation love, Eros - romantic love with someone, Philia - infatuated feeling of love, and Agape - the unconditional God-kind of love). Basketball is only a small part of our life.

Most teams that I know do not have a lot of parent participation and it makes it hard on the team. The coaches have to depend on these parents to help them get Joe, Mike, and Larry to the game. Comments:Man, there is a lot of drama going on with the so called big exposure teams and programs. I have to wonder if it's all worth it. Parents have kids thinking they have already made it. Kids have to be good sports, and so do parents. Lead by example. It's true, some games are lost by players, and some by coaching, but that's every system. I will keep my son as far away from all of this childesh drama as possible. Thanks for the ignorance!!! Even NBA players need practice to gel with their new teams, so why not kids? When you put theses so called dream teams together without knowing kids or their ignorant parents, this is what you get!!! I don't feel sorry for the coaches either. They're the one's who do it and create this mess! When you steal kids, sometimes you steal viruses(Parents and Players) Groom the kids and get to know them. Research more than their bball skills.

People are getting it twisted when you don't know the whole story. You are right kids do read the posting and my child took it personally. The All-ohio 13U that was making some noise was not the same team that went to Nationals. By state and national it was a whole different team from the King James tournament, swish-n-dish, and Indy. We lost several players because of the new players were added. For whatever reason we lost chemistry. My son will be okay. No matter what a person say that there is a time and place for everything but sometimes frustration can take over. Parents put in their time and money as well. I do not expect coaches to be perfect. I have seen both play this year. OBC has good players but need to revamp the team - some of its long time players can no longer play at this level. All Ohio could be good but they have WAY too many attitudes on that team. They are a case of not sitting a player when he needs to be on the beach for attitude. - One side note I thought that All Ohio took 2nd in the state this past season but the website says they were the state champs. Comments:Very TRUE but some coaches only want to showcase certain players! Some parents and players kiss alot of --- to the coaches. Some parents and players want everything for free and act like they have no money to pay the fees but have spending money all the time and have the top shoes. We all see this all the time! Coaches have no LOYALTY anymore to the parents and kids that have stuck with thier programs.

Comments:A lot of other programs have kids go too college. Not just OBC and All-Ohio. Coaches have to put their teams in the correct events. If your playing in a exposure event and your team doesn't win a game. But your players show that they have some type of skills. That's all it takes to get on a coaches radar.

Frairs have played top competition, OBC's played top competition, when Lima tried to step up they couldn't get it done. Buckeye Prep doesn't do much with their kids. Really i'm tired of seeing DYT talent going out of town. Talent split between squads could win it all.

Comments:I didn't recruit any players. Last winter basketball season, I coached the 6th grade team in CJ select basketball program in Dayton. The coach for the 7th grade team had several players on his team that wanted to play after winter basketball. My Blue Storm team only had about 5 players so we combined teams half from cincinnai/dayton. We added one player who was looking for a team. Yes we had more than 3 exceptions but it's never been about winning AAU titles for me. It's always been about coaching and helping assist young men into developing the skills necessary to become successful adults thru basketball. I've always focused on the fundamentals of basketball and teamwork for all my kids. As well, I've focused on developing a basketball IQ for the kids that I've ever coached. Last season we focused on playing in the more so called exposure events. Things worked out for us because the kids got to play at a high level and against some of the top teams.

Actually CALEB ISRANKED NATIONALLY IN THE CLASS OF 2015 (HOOPSCOOP.COM). STOP HATING AND WORRY ABOUT TOUR OWN KIDS!!!!!!

As a matter of fact someone just posted it a few post back,it says AGE first then grade...can you read??? Leon and Caleb are not age exempt because they are 6th grade AGE which means they just started school early. We have not asked for any of our kids to be ranked anyway so keep making yourself look the fool by speaking on something in which you knowing about.

Comments:Your right, I don't care what age you are, you should play with your grade so you can see where you stand on the talent level. Playing down cann't help the kid win a spot on Varsity when he is in the 9th or 10th grade. All of the kids in the 7th grade play at 12U in AAU ball. A kid in the 7th should be compared to other 7th graders, not 6th graders no matter the age. So in the 9th grade do kids play with 8th graders to get better? They should be playing against Freshman and Sophmores. Grade has alot to do with it in my opinion, when they graduate their teamates now will be going into their senior year. The ranking sites and magazines rank players in what class they are in, not what age they are. Hicks has bamboozled these kids. The 11U are in the class of 2016 not 2015. My rankings have just changed finding this out, and I have checked and it is true. I due honor the parents for letting them stay up a grade for academic reasons, but were talking about 6th graders not 7th. My 2 cents is

When college coaches want to know who the young up and coming players are in Ohio they call Stovall. Also, Hoop Scoop’s Chris Johnson has confirmed his attendance as well. Chris Johnson is well connected locally, statewide and nationally. Finally, Rivals, one of the top 2 or 3 scouting services in the country, will be represented at the event with Brian Snow. Brian is also one of the leading scouts nationally and statewide. In addition, I will be posting a post showcase report http://www.HoopsReport.com. Comments:Leon is a man child right now and has the foot work and strength that allows him to defend every position,he has a good all around game but his jump shot and ball handling needs to improve if he continues to grow and improve the sky will be the limit for him..he would be number 1.Ashon needs to improve his jump shot,I dont believe he defends as well as Leon and thats what puts leon first.Caleb has an all around game also but he needs to improve on defense.Rodrick is solid but he needs to improve on defense as well.I seen a new kid this year that was left out of the list of others and I think his name is Kwmane(big guy for AO Elite)I think he will be a monster as the age group gets older(I've seen him blow up though..he needs to improve his attitude. The city has alot of talent and so does the state. The kids need to be ranked by position.

That team Duck was on at Dunbar could go. If Brooadnax had played at Mt. Healthy it would of been over for the City. Don't forget about the great Woodward teams. The teams in 85-86 had several D-one players, one went to Evansville. The 87 team had a lot as well, man we had some battles back in the day. Didn't see the ballers in 88.

Comments:Coach Cook, Dunbar was awsome in the 80's and so was Mt Healthy. I played in some All Star games with Duck Springer and Darryl Freeman (Great Athlete). Then there was Kirk Taylor and Mark Baker soon after. Mt Healthy had Michael Davenport, Bedford, Maurice Lamar, Jeff Scott (6'10 white kid that played for UC)and the late Cass White who played D1 and had over a 40" vertical. Actually Mt Healthy had several D1 players within a short year period 84-88. If Chuck Broadnax would of transferred from College Hill they would of had one more and won the State in 85. Do you remeber the Dunbar and Hamilton game in 88? Mark Baker and company went into Hamilton and Mo Riggins (Ashon's uncle from Lakers) and company beat them in one of the most rememberable games in that era. Also, Carlton Clayborne could definetly play went too Miami.

The rest of the kids are not much different from each other. 5 or 6 from All Ohio, 4 or 5 from Lakers, 1 or 2 from Ohio Prep and so on. It will also be guard dominant with a few bigger kids who might or might not be 6'1 when they grow up. From seeing some Parents I'm betting more in the 6'0ft range. With that said here is my ranking from seeing many games and kids.

Lima could play. Springfield South (Carlton Clayborne and Jason killer Gee) was actually #1 in State with the Middies and Lima 2 and 3. I watched them play each other also. Comments:The answer was given earlier and he did a great job of explaining. The difference is strength and knowledge of the game. At the younger ages, you can press because kids can't make the deep or cross-court pass without it being stolen. And you can frustrate young big kids. As they get older and stronger, the press isn't as effective, and the big kids can have a huge impact on the game with shot-blocking and rebounding. Guard play wins games until about 7th grade, and then post play starts to win in 8th grade. If you have both for balance, you have a better chance of winning in AAU. That is why tems cheat and try to get a big kid that can play a little to go with their guards! It's sad, but it happens. Great question though!

Comments:Thanks for the support... but let's get somethin' straight... the GMC put Lima Senior out because they hated to drive 2 hours up here and take that whoopin'! LOL! When Kingsbury had Hamilton tough, we whooped 'em. When Lakota was undefeated and #1 in the state, they came up here and got ran by 15 (Lakota did get us for state the next year after we were up 18 in the 2nd half). Y'all know Princeton and the Middies got the business too. And in football in '96 and '97 we smacked EVERY team (won state in '96). That was a great conference back then, but now the GMC is really loaded. And we have gotten weaker being in this weak conference. Middletown beat us so bad on the field last year I think they took them off the schedule. LOL! Cincy is strong in football and basketball. I only wish I could take part in coaching some of that talent, but next year we will get our respect back! 2010 Lima rides again!

Comments:It's hard to win a any age group in Nationals. Alot of even teams, with good coaching. I would say though the older age groups is a little harder. For one there are about 20 to 30 more teams. Also, Big men play a much bigger role than the guard dominant younger kids. Big men are much more developed at 14 than at age 11. I will tell you this, if your Coach can win at age 11U or 12U, he can win at 15U with the right players. But in my opinion he has to come up with his age group or has already Coached an older team to be able to place in Nationals.

The AO Elite Knights must have some of the best coaches in the nation, and they can't get love for being some of the best in the state? This makes no sense. And the one guy thought the Lakers were from California and not Cincinnati. Not Kobe man, Ashon leads the team. Phil Jackson isn't coaching, Riccardo and company are. Team Berea has some great coaching. Buckeye Prep's coaches are solid despite the comment below. Lakers staff does a great job. Ohio Prep came out of nowhere so the coaches must be doing good. But until they play AAU, they will not be mentioned on this site because it is all about AAU. Not much talke of high school or middle school on this site. My big man this year, Austin Gutting, played AAu for me the last two years. Went to state and nationals with All-Ohio and played very well, and got an award at Nike Rising Stars camp last weekend. It takes a few years to be a good Coach at the highest AAU level. The game is too fast, for someone with no AAU experience. It took me over 70 games for the game too slow down, where I could be a descent Coach. It's easy against average teams, but the Nationall level is a different story. They come at you so hard, you have too react as a Coach and a player, no time too think or your down 20+.

The talent has always been here. This is keeping it reall, the man can coach and so can Leon. Ask Ricardo how hard it is, the Lakers never placed until this year. You still have to play the right defense, run the right offense, sub at the right times, get on the refs to a certain extent, prepare them in pratice. have a game plan, know your players, make adjustments when the other Coach makes his, offer encouragement and discipline, and most of all deal with the Parents! Anyone of the 3 coaches run practice at any givin time, coach Leon does a grand job with drillin the boys so why get in the way of it to say that coach Thurman or myself doesnt coach is false we have took those boys all over the country (without coach Leon and won)yes I will tell that I learn alot from Leon because he brought me in to aau plus he is a good high school coach (in my opinion)but he will tell you himself that we all play a role in the development of our kids. I will also tell you that our wins and loses are as a whole meaning coaches, players, and parents...in our group NO ONE PERSON IS GREATER THAN TEAM. maybe thats why we are having the success we're having.

The Lakers offense goes thru the 3 guards, and in turn they stand out. They all 3 are very talented, but in my opinion there are several guards who would stand out playing for the Lakers. The coach did the same thing for the Royals, offense around Ashon and John. And Rodrick has had the green light for years with the Lakers. They all would be very good players for whatever team they played for, but alot has too do with what system their in and the Coaches philosphy. I also believe by watchibg over a dozen games that Ashon is the best all around player in the State. His shooting is ok, but will improve with age. In the system he gets too show his talent.

I have watched them practice Hicks does not even be there half the time and when he is he sits back and watches. Coach Hicks stands up in the game but he has a different role than coaching. No one likes the other coach but he does all the actual coaching. I have a team that has played them and Coach Hicks himself told me this. Hicks is a great guy but you can not judge who is a good coach by wins and loses. Barry Sanders was one of the best running backs ever but played for a not so good Lions team, so when you pick the top players lets go by their complete game and not by the team which they play for and i will bet that list is going to look different.

Ohio needs to build up their youth teams, if there going to compete in the future, can you feel me? They one State and Nationals not another team close. Look at the top 10 in 11U, none of them close 1) All Ohio 2) Georgia Stars 3) Battle New Jersy 4) Georgia again Rimrockers 5) Bulls DC 6) California Lakers 7) Wisconsin 8) Memphis 9) DC Assault 10) Illinios

Comments:I see that so many coaches and parents get on this site, I thought we as coaches should use it to help parents help their young student-athletes work on their game in the off-season. I know, some coaches don't want kids in their program to get better out of fear, but the more other kids improve, the more your kids will from the competition. I would like people to post a drill that they think helps kids, or a group of things to form a workout. I will start... The Jab Step is a great skill that every young player needs to develop. Starts with a simple swing through. Next, use short step to long step. Take a short step and then a longer step to get your foot around the defender's foot and attack the basket. Then do that but instead of going that direction, go the opposite direction and get that foot around the defender. Do this with each foot on each side of the court.

Comments:Hmmm... this is a difficult one. I agree, Ashon is #1. The other guard from the Lakers is nice too, and the guard from the Knights is top notch. Then my nephew is in the mix, and he has been shooting very well lately. The big thing he brings to the table is his defense. He played against the Lakers early in the year with a broken thumb and didn't look good, so people thought players were better than him, but his shot is much better now. And he did very well at camp last weekend. But also in the top 5, there is a kid from King of the Court worthy of this list. To be honest, a top 5 list would be hard to do. I have seen many of the kids, and there are two other kids from Lima who are capable of making a top 10 list easy, and one of them is honestly a top 5 if you are counting the other kid from the Lakers. This kid did not play AAU. So we should get a list together in May.

Second, how can you be a good guard if you can't shoot. Third, how can you be a good guard if you can't play defense or rebounder. It's more to the game than just offense. Please know the game before you talk.

Comments:Some great recent posts! I like the one about the kids doing well in school. I saw that post as well, but I didn't respond because that person obviously has many of the kids mistaken. There are a few kids who are terrible academically and are playing. Once they hit middle school, something will have to change or they will not be eligible, and maybe that will be a wake-up for those struggling to focus on academics. But for the most part, these kids do very well in school. For the post assuming that an 11-year-old is going to be an All-American, we can only hope for that, but nothing is guaranteed. There was a young man around our area who played with my oldest son when they were younger who we thought would be an All-American in football. He started varsity as a freshman and put up great numbers as a sophomore. This kid was killed in a car accident. We never know what our lives hold, so we have to get as much out of life as we can and help as many others as we can, while we ca

We changed our jerseys to say Team Ohio to include the few kids we have not from Lima, but they understand what it is. Columbus area has 10 million people. We have 100,000 in the county here. I am sure they can find a solid coach and some quality players to form Team Columbus. LOL! At least they ought to be able to. The comments about the rankings and players blooming late is exactly right. One of my best friend's kid started playing in the 9th grade, and he is getting a scholly to either Xavier or Marquette and has surpassed those who started early. But some who start early do finish at the top as well. It is just like other said before, physical changes, heart, and attitudes. So let's stay positive with these young people and search for the late bloomer at the rec! LOL!

All the talent in the world will not do any good when they are ineligible to play. Another 1/4 of these kids will not play past high school due to bad attitudes. That leaves 25 % of these kids that will play beyond high school and only a few will make it to DIV I. Keep this in mind when discussing these yound men.

A couple of those players will get lucky and got to the right program and will be better than the guys that have been playing for years. at the 11u age group those kids are good but I do high school evaluation and it is only three kids that stand out above the rest Ashon from the Lakers will be an All American, and Leon from the nights will eventually step out and play the wing and he can be a Mcdonald All American (I am talking about top ten nationally), abd the new big kid the nights added this year has a big upside. The Caleb Kid and X will be good it depends on how there bodies develop and if they grow. The rest can be caught.

Comments:Half the players on these young lists will stay on the lists and become stars. We don't know for sure which ones. Much of this is based on physical characteristics -- at what point in their lives they grow, get stronger, etc. Some are physically mature at age 12 or 13, while others don't go through puberty until age 16. All of that needs to be taken into consideration.

Don't get me wrong, there are some very talented players at 11U across the Knights, Lakers, Team Lima, etc. These kids are highly dedicated and have alot of potential - but they are only kids - I have seen every one of them play and they play well at times and struggle at times - like everyone does. Kepp it all in perspective. This ranking stuff is hilarious.

With training and time, Matt will be a wing player, but he played the 4 for us this year. DJ started off with us and is a very solid guard who can shoot the jumpshot as well as get to the basket. Comments:My nephew, Xavier or "X" is not the best guard in the state. Once you are the best at an early age, where else can you go but down? He is not on his way down, but on his way up. He is one of the top 3 guards in the state at that level. And he will keep working until he one of the best in the nation as recognized by national scouting services when he is in high school. So anything at the U11 level is really meaningless right now. A kid who I would have sworn was going to the NBA when we were that age didn't play after 10th grade. Keep it in perspective. I didn't take the comment as a knock on my nephew, but a knock on people who believe he is the best. And that is fine because i don't live through him or my son or my players; I just try to prepare them to make critics reconsider what they have said in the past, and next year will be a great opportunity to do that with the group we will have. But until then, all of you be blessed!

Im sure his dad would not put his own son in a bad situation or team. Im sure it was about experience and exposure. Now we see it is best to take a team as far as they can go. A Team Lima team will go to U12 nationals next year and X will be a big part of that. The Indiana Elite team was talented and played very well so don't discredit them. Who did they lose to? Team Battle who went to the final four and Cincinnati Lakers who finished 6th. Hear coaches name is Coach Printup for All Ohio Red. Don't know him, people say he is a good guy.

The new Coach is Ashon's cousin from the Lakers and grew up with the white dude Anderson who is the Lakers head coach. They already have 3-4 good players with this new team. Could this be a new team to reckon with? How many players from Cincy will they get?

Comments:With the aau season now coming to a close and everything being settled. I think alot of people put their foot in their mouth exspecially on this message board. 1st of all the Lakers 11u and Ohio Prep 11u were talking all year on how the gap has leveled and how they will beat the Knights (ALL Ohio Elite). Well they won state for the 4th year straight and won another national championship. 2nd people said that the 12u knights were not all that well they won state for the 5th year in a roll and finshed 5th without a big. Everyone overlooked the Lakers 13u and 14u and they won state in both age groups. People need to close their mouths and let their play do the talking. Overall Ohio had a great year and we did ir the right way, and all the teams mentioned above are very well coached, and with out a doubt All Ohio has proved itself to be one the premiere programs in the Country (4 National Championships, and 1 top ten).

Comments:Of Course as a coach you would like your top 6-7 to return. In my case pick up kid played for his own father I knew he would not be returning the next year. But I did know he would give the team a better chance at winning tough games. You don't want to alienated your "ride or die" players but their is a reason a coach may not have confidence. Over a long season I'm sure kids get opportunities, when those ops come kids must show coach they understand what he wants. "Practice is where you learn - Game is where you execute". I think some teams over the years who have picked up kids have done well, it's about chemistry, defense and the luck of the draw.

Comments:I agree, sometime a pick-up player will help the team get focused, while other teams they won't have the passion for the team and work as hard as the "ride or die" players who have been there. It is a catch 22 situation. And it is a coach's decision. The problem comes in when parents take it personally as if the coach is trying to hurt their kid's confidence when the coach may be just trying to help the team have the best chance to do well, which will build confidence. It has to be communicated far in advance, but sometimes it happens too quick. I am sorry I jumped in this topic. I just wanted to give an opinion like most message boards where they are topic based and anyone can join in. My bad! Praise God anyway!

Comments:I agree that practices is where the child is supposely get better. But the problem that I have is when coaches have a good team already, but they don't have confidence in the team enough that they go out and recruit players that don't come to none of your practices and you start them over your other players that have been with you the whole time. Players that spent their time making sure they come to every practices. Never miss. those ride and die players are the ones who coaches crap on you. Every team so far that picked up players for national came back with nothing. Those pick up players don't have the passion for your team like the ones who have been there day 1. So if your team lose it doesn't mean as much to the pick up player, it is not their regular team. So guess what, coaches you crapped all over on your ride and die players who took it to heart. I hope you coaches are satisfy and hope all your players come back and the pick up players as well.

Comments:I Understand your point of view. I have gone to nationals with two pick-ups. I understood parents didn't like it but one of my top scorers was unable to make the trip with father being laid-off. My starting guard let the atmosphere of nationals effect his game. I pulled him after four games for a pick-up kid who avg 15 ppg, and made his team mates better. His parents felt I was disloyal, satan reincarnated. They didn't see that off the bench his scoring picked up 12 ppg. He lead the second team pushing the lead, and he wasn't stressed. As a coach i'm trying to be fair to all and win games. Sometimes difficult decisions have to be made.

Comments:These are two different issues. As for the number of players per team, I have always had 10 to 12. The top 9 are going to play every game, and the bottom three are on the team for two reasons, to get better at practice and for their potential (future contribution after they improve). If the kid has potential, but doesn't have a team or a solid coach to help them, we take them. They are going to get better from practice, and if parents pay $300 for 4 months of practice and getting better and playing in a few games during tournaments, that is far cheaper than paying the $25 per hour most charge to do individual sessions. That would be 12 one-hour sessions. That is barely 6 weeks! Now, if a team adds players just for nationals and guys who were playing all year are now not playing, that is different and I don't agree with that.

Different teams-different needs and issues. Parents beware. When your kids get picked up to go to the National and the team is already established as 8-10 deep and now your are making it the 14th or 15 player..Your kid is only cover the cost of the hotel/condo/transportation for the coaches..This is why coaches charge that fee to travel to the Nationals. As a parent I would b pissed if my kid is the regular kid player and here come mr.12-13-14 player getting more time.

The notion of equal playing time comes from the rec programs where parents pay money and rules our in place to ensure that each kid plays. You can blame the coach or you can blame your child. You have to be realistic about your childs ability.

Coaches, if you cannot play everyone of your players no matter how close the game is, then don't have them on your team. I am tired of watching a team with so much potential, but have sorry a** coaches. I know coaches are volunteering their time, but and I mean but, move out the way if you are going to do your team a disservice by not knowing the game. Because we teach our kids to not give up or quit, we have to endure the bull crap until the season is over, then we don't bring our kids back.

Comments:There is no need to divide the All-Ohio program when it comes to All-Ohio Purple and Red. That is a big problem with today's athletes and fans... we have to have rivalry for no reason at all. They all deserve the same credit because they all have done a wonderful job of winning nationals and repping Ohio! If they keep it up, they will go to college free and be prepared for when the economy turns around. And maybe a few of them will play professionally. But until then, let's celebrate All-Ohio's success along with every other Ohio team that did well like the Lakers U11 kids. We do it without cheating like some programs in other states choose to.

The Stars had the lead up to 13, but wasn't diciplined enough to work til the clock read 0:00. The Stars were also weak mentally. The karma surrounding them was so negative and they couldn't handle it. How about the AAU Commissioner having to talk with the coach(es) several times before tip-off (probablly to discuss the looming allegations of illegal players)? There was a non-Ohio team that even put up the dollars to protest... Georgia, ANY OHIO team will take you all on whenever (if you bring your horses or not!) GO OHIO!!!

The Coaching is horrible in Atl, The All Ohio team did not use any gimics they played you straight man the whole game even though undersized they ran their sets and chopped you down to size. The Rimrockers got blew out by Team Battle after All Ohio beat them in the semi's. All you Georgia teams are using older kids to compensate for lack of coaching. As a matter of fact the Rimrockers where embarrassed by the Cincy Knights at 12u and they Knights were again undersized. Both of those teams play straight man to man and guard you the complete length of the court. So how can you be better if you lose!!! Overall the talent level nationally at this age group is average. There are very few super teams such as Nike Team Florida, Houston Defenders or Arkansas Mustangs that were truly dominant at the 11U level. Some one has to give that young coach (don't know his name?)that coaches in the 12u and 11u Knights(All Ohio) team credit. Comments:The competition at the AAU 11U tournament was amazing. There were 27 states represented and also Puerto Rico. The total number of teams 72 just in division 1.Take a look at the AAU website to look at many experienced teams and also newcomers. Now imagine teams with 6 foot tall players that are also aggressive and I don't mean just post players. Then congratulate the Ohio teams for showing up and showing out! They competed with the best in the country, without a doubt. Give them their "props".

Your so-called best player looks out of shape and too much ball-hoggin going on. Indy teams looked really good. My oh my, the Texas Titans looked impressive and very BIG! I can not believe how many 6'7 and 6'8 kids at this age group! Ohio has dominated the country at nationals this year at all age groups. How many titles do they have so far????

All-Ohio is a great program and I talk to Jerry Watson on a regular basis so if kids want to go to Columbus to play so be it. We are working to keep our local kids here and we do not have the money that All-Ohio has to back them so yes our program is about money. Without the funds kids would not be able to play, however I have NEVER turned a kid away that could not afford our program we help them find sponsors. I do know we have more teams than any other program in Northwest Ohio and we have more kids from our program that go to school than any other program in Norhwest Ohio. Our numbers grow each year and we have kids from all over Ohio and Michigan so we must be doing something right. Is my program perfect by no means, but we learn something every year and we are knocking on the door of being mentioned with All-Ohio and Ohio Basketball which college coaches cons

Comments:Thank you for clearing this up. I was a little worried, but I thought some people had bad information. I dealt with the same thing man. I had an emergency right after football season and needed to BORROW some money from the team. The head coach knew and had no problem, but he didn't inform an assistant and it got blown out of proportion. I had the money back in the account within 9 days, after my retirement plan sent me a check (I had to fax in a request to withdraw and needed a loan in the meantime). If we don't help the people who volunteer, who coach, and who do all they can while taking time away from their families to make the organization better and give more opportunities to the youth, we will lose good people.

We have our work cut out for us next year as we plan to add some players from the Lima area and put out a quality team ready for that level of competition. I see the Georgia Stars are in the final 4, and they beat us in the finals at King James so we know they are a great team. The Kinghts beat us in the Final 4 at USSSA so I would love to see them both in the finals. That gives me hope for next year. Bring it home Knights!

Comments:I actually emailed AAU, and they sent the email to someone in Ohio to speak to me about it. I told him my feelings. Then I went to a couple of U11 games at nationals and I really feel like AAu has to do something. I recommended that they ban a coach for one year, ban a program caught for one year, ban a player for one year, and send out their findings to any sponsors listed on that teams web site or to any shoe company sponsoring them. I thought the goal was to see who are the top players/teams in each age group, but it is only about winning, and when you can't win fairly, maybe you can unfairly, and that is why people cheat. Parents go along with it because their child experiences winning and their child's team gets notoriety, and they don't want to take that away. Sad cycle.

Comments:The same thing has always brought me to the table... the kids. I am simply speaking my mind as to what I believe is best for the kids. Not our program, not AAU, not Ohio, and not any shoe company. As long as kids aren't being exploited, it's cool. As long as one kid is on an even playing field with another, it's cool. If a kid is playing against a kid who is 2 grades higher in high school, it is expected (freshman against a junior). But two years difference before high school is a greater margin. It is unfair no matter how you look at it. I had my team scrimmage our high school freshman team to prepare for the season. I knew we would get beat, but our kids played hard and got better because they had to. But in tournaments there is no way that this would be fair. So I am not caught up in hype, but I am concerned about a level playing field.

Parents have the first opportunity to call the coach out when he brings an older player to join your team. However we want our kid to succeed so bad that we allow it to happen because of the benefits our child can recieve from playing with an older player that can help them possibly win a national championship. Everybody wants to be a winner and they want their kids to be winneres too, which is ok until you become willing to cheat to acheive it

However some are in it for personal gain and it's not about the kid or the program it's about the personal gain they recieve from winning. The big shoe companies and other sponsors don't make it any better because if they wouldn't go looking for the next Kobe, LeBron or whoever at the age of 7 it would cut down on some of the cheating. There's things that can be done from all parties to help minimize the cheating as far as parents who speak out when they knkow better, or coaches having enough self confidence to win fairly,or the AAU really focusing their efforts to eliminate older kids from playing improperly. To me It seems as if the AAU is more focused on making the young players well rounded people but they aren't holding the coaches to the same standards. In the end the kids wind up getting EXPLOITED, AAU gets it's MONEY, and the coaches get their CHAMPIONSHIPS, SHOE DEALS and whateve

However once your child reaches high schoo, if good enough they will be palying against kids that are 2,3,and 4 years older, and it helps transition them to that when they paly against older kids. Comments:I have no problem with a kid being held back, especially if he needs to be for academic reasons. Most kids being held back for academics wouldn't need to be, but they don't have the home environment that would have helped them do better in school, so it has caused this issue. There is a kid like that in Lima who is a great athlete but is way behind in school. Whatever grade you are in, play at that level. But if you are in the 8th grade, you have no business playing against 12 year olds who are going to be in the 6th grade. That is my problem. When that kid is a senior, who is he going to compete for scholarships with, the other seniors or the kid who is going to be a sophomore? Keep It On The High like K-Drama, and stop cheating kids out of their opportunity to show what hard work can do!

Comments:But the biggest problem is that they were not the only ones. Maybe it happened to them so they did the same thing. But what is AAU doing about it? That is the bigger problem. There is no ban. There is no penalty that follows the coach/program. If they put a 1-year coaching ban and 1-year program ban on teams, and then send the word out to shoe companies and go on their web sites to check for sponsors and send a letter to them as well, that will shut ALL that down. But why should they care when they are benefitting. It looks great when an AAU official can boast about 5th or 6th graders dunking when talking at the national convention. Imagine saying "Hey we have some great programs at the lower levels and many of them are cheating". Exactly. It doesn't sound as good. OHIO, PLEASE, PLEASE don't succumb to this behavior. I saw an Ohio team with kids older, but I didn not see them play and I hope they didn't. I hope they were just traveling with the team.

It was stressful because they were not playing the way they do for their coach, but his job would not let him off work. They won 3 nailbiters out of their first 4 games. But that is not my subject. What is wrong with grown folks these days? Why are we playing older kids against younger kids? Is it that serious? I wrote AAU and got a response, but it was weak! For those parents who hate to fundraise and those coaches who need money charge a $20 to $30 fee per month for each kid on the team. $20 x 10 kids + $200 X however many teams..$200 pays for something. Keep it up thru the whole AAU season and collect at the first practice of the month.

Comments:Did the coach tell them I didnt pay. Example every year several coaches for football & basketball beg my 4 sons to play, I say no, Im locked into to someone else for whatever reasons, coaches with throw it out there "if you bring your son to me, I will take care of the fees" although I dont, other parents may do so. If the coach is telling that business to others thats not kosher.

Comments:Pugs, I commend u on your role and how you care for the children and your positive comments. I'ved read your comments weekly for months know. I dont know you, but you come off as a cool concerned gentleman. You coaches dont get paid and take on alot..the commment about $4 that a kid comes with...I understand. This is a situation where the saying goes "you cant pick your parents" no pun intended. I've seen the SAME kids season after season come with ramon noodles and a bowl and spoon out of town hopping the room has a microwave...As a parent traveling I make sure whatever my kid eats, he eats cuz thats how i operate. I just want other parents to care like i do and instead of assuming my kid playing for free and how much i paid for his sneakers, notice that needy child on the team thats always hungry or thursday and begging for the other kids gatorade and snacks. THAT KID IS CRYING OUT FOR HELP! Quit focusing on my ride and quit assuming i didnt pay. Did the coach tell them I didn

Comments:What>! Man, I wish we had every parent go. I wish we had that kind of support! Half our parents can't go, and on one of our teams, two-thirds can't go. Kids are supposed to pay $20 for their hotel room, but sometimes a kid shows up with $4 for the whole weekend! We gotta look out for them, but then the parent thinks that is the way it is so it keeps going. It's hard when you have to cut a kid off because of a parent, especially when the kid needs some positive role models and some skill development, and that's what makes it hard, but if you don't, how long will it go on? Forever! Some people want to get over no matter what. And when the other parents find out, there is animosity. I am feelin' the parent who is asked
